In 1959 Leo Mantha became the last man executed by hanging in British Columbia. He was convicted of murdering his lover on a naval base outside Victoria but the trial focused as much on the couple's relationship as on the facts of the crime.

He lived with his uncouth father-in-law, who blamed him for his lack of money and would have preferred to evict his daughter and the whole family. Marsík had an exaggerated opinion of himself and spun naive fantasies and dreams of a better life in which he could still make a fortune. He put an advertisement in the newspaper that he was looking for a wife. The ad was answered by an elderly maid, an old maid who had saved all her life and had a few thousand in her book. He had been seeing the maid, but in time she grew impatient and wanted to get married.
