Summary I am submitting this short film to the Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival because experimentation is the driving force behind my work and I am keen to share my work with audiences in Turkey. My moving image work features my performance persona, HALA. She is a fierce, intelligent and resentful woman, a powerful and enduring archetype in my family's narrative. I wanted to explore her experience in order to understand her and myself better. My moving experiments explore HALA's interactions with the world around her, which are sometimes amusing or absurd. I enjoy using green screen in order to create visually stunning scenes which propel HALA into other realms. By dressing up in a costume and painting my face I am changed and able to make work which draws on my past and the experience of my female ancestors. But HALA is not real, she is a shadow, a clown or persona I inhabit, a way to connect with the past and a way to move on. I am interested in challenging society's expectations of what HALA might do and how she might behave in public. Some of my work draws on experimental work of the Surrealists and the silent film era, in particular the films of Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton. I am interested in challenging expectations of how a childless and unmarried woman from a patriarchal society should spend her time.
