The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Sandaoling Mines is the biggest open-pit coal mine in the Northwest region of China. Most workers at the Sandaoling Mines are second generation miners. Their fathers' generation were called there by the Chinese government to support the border's Big Northwest Constructions, which began in 1958 with the mining expanding from the Northeast of China to Inner Mongolia, then to the Sandaoling Mines. Xuan Jian was born in Sandaoling in 1967. As a second generation miner, his life led him like train tracks straight into the mines after graduation; he worked in the vicious environment of the steam train for thirty years. As the resources gradually dried up, the Chinese government announced the closing of the Sandaoling Mines in 2020. Xuan Jian and the steam trains will all become just a part of history. The third generation of the miners have already moved toward the city, the town will in the end, be gone like the steam.

Follows four generations of South African Boers as they grapple with their identity as white farmers in a post-Apartheid South Africa, where land ownership is highly contentious and violence and racism are endemic.

This tale produced by Lois Cook and her family very intimately shares the brutal, mostly untold history of what happened to the Nyangbul people of the NSW North Coast. You will be surprised at what Lois finds when she becomes history detective tracking down people and documents to see if the family's oral history is supported by other accounts from the 19th century. With the help of the staff of Ballina Library she discovers commentary by settlers and historians who were compelled to record the brutality against the local Indigenous people.
