Summary Major Pavel Viktorov was appointed head of the police department in the city of his childhood - the quiet Valuev near Moscow. His wife Ksenia plans to equip her husband in a new place and return to Moscow - her job is there, her son is a student there. But man, as we know, assumes... Patriarchal Valuev meets the Viktorovs with a fire in which two young Gypsies die. Local law enforcement officers talk about an accident, a gypsy baron - about a murder that "as usual" will not be solved. Investigating with the help of Ksenia this seemingly simple case, Pavel discovers Valuev's secret criminal life, which has been going on for decades... Ksenia also has to give up the idea of a "guest marriage". It turns out that their former classmate Tatiana, Pavel's first love, is serving in Valuev.
